Classical Greece, influenced by Homer, was inhabited by humans in the Balkan region and the Greek Peninsula from an early but indeterminate date. They increasingly mingled with peoples from different societies in the third millennium B.C.E. As a result of this Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Phoenicians, and others active in the region had been places where early inhabitants of the Greek Peninsula built their societies.
